Whey protein: the benchmark protein
Whey is the protein found in milk serum. It is rich in essential amino acids, digests quickly and mixes in seconds with water or milk. It is the protein athletes use most: protein contributes to a growth in and the maintenance of muscle mass.
Whey concentrate contains about 70 to 80% protein, with a little lactose and fat that give it a creamy texture and plenty of taste. It is the best choice to start with and for everyday use. Our customers' favourites include BioTech USA 100% Pure Whey, Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey, ESN Designer Whey, Scitec Nutrition 100% Whey Protein Professional and QNT Light Digest Whey.
A 25 to 30 g scoop in 250 to 300 ml of water or milk provides about 20 to 24 g of protein. If lactose does not agree with you or you are cutting, look at whey isolate instead. All the differences are explained in our whey guide, and our calculator tells you how much protein to aim for each day.
Frequently asked questions
Whey concentrate or whey isolate?
Concentrate is creamier and cheaper; isolate is higher in protein and lower in lactose and fat. For everyday use, concentrate is enough; when cutting or if digestion is an issue, isolate is a better fit.
Can I take whey without doing sport?
Yes: it is simply a source of protein, to include in a varied and balanced diet without exceeding your daily needs.
With water or milk?
With water, the shake is lighter and easier to digest; with milk, it is creamier and adds extra protein and calories.
